First Visit Guide

Your First Class at Altman Fitness: What to Expect

The scariest part is the door. Here's what's on the other side of it.

Nervous about your first class? Almost everyone is. Here's exactly how a first visit works — from parking to the post-class huddle — so nothing is a surprise.

Before you come

Pick a class

Every class on our schedule is a coached Strength & Conditioning Circuit, about 50 minutes long, and every one scales to your level — so any class is a good first class. If you've claimed a free week, we'll email your pass and help you choose.

Sign your waiver and share your goals

Everyone who trains with us signs a liability waiver once — it takes about two minutes. Members do it in MY ALTMAN, our member app, along with a short health & goals questionnaire (about three minutes) that helps your coach tailor every workout. Haven't set up MY ALTMAN yet? No problem — we can take care of the waiver with you at the front desk.

What to wear and bring

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in
  • Athletic shoes
  • A water bottle
  • Nothing else — we have the equipment

Dress in layers in the colder months — you'll warm up fast once class gets going.

Arriving

We're at 7417 Washington Ave S, Edina, MN 55439, just off Highway 169, with free parking at the door. Get directions.

Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early on your first visit. That gives you time to check in, take care of anything that's waiting (like your waiver), fill your water bottle and meet your coach without feeling rushed. Members check in with the code in MY ALTMAN; on your first visit, just tell the front desk your name.

Meeting your coach

Tell your coach it's your first class. They'll want to know your goals and anything that might affect how you move — an old injury, a recent surgery, a cranky knee, a sore back. You don't need to explain it perfectly; just mention it, and they'll modify movements for you throughout the class.

Our coaches make a point of learning your name, your goals and your limitations. Members describe the vibe as a “Cheers”-like community — people notice when you show up. Meet the coaching team.

How the class runs

About 50 minutes, start to finish. The workout changes every day, but the shape of a class stays familiar.

  1. PART 1

    Getting moving

Class opens by getting everyone's body warm and moving before the harder work starts. It's a good moment to notice how you feel today.

  2. PART 2

    The walkthrough

Your coach explains the day's circuit and demonstrates every exercise — along with easier and harder versions — before anyone starts.

  3. PART 3

    The circuit

You work through the series of strength and conditioning exercises at your own level while the coach moves around the room helping with form, weights and modifications.

  4. PART 4

    Finishing up

Catch your breath, cool down at your own pace, and join the huddle at the end of class — it's where the community part really shows.

Never done a circuit class? Our group fitness page explains how they work and who they're for.

You set the level

Nobody is expected to keep up with anyone but themselves. A first-timer and a seven-year member can do the same workout side by side.

  • Choose a lighter or heavier weight — there's no “right” number
  • Swap to an easier or harder version of any exercise
  • Take the rest you need; you only keep up with yourself
  • Tell the coach about injuries so they can modify movements for you

If you'd like more one-on-one help before joining a group — especially around an injury — a few personal training sessions are a great way to build confidence first. We're not medical providers, so keep your healthcare team in the loop too.

After class

Feeling a little sore a day or two after a new workout is common, especially if it's been a while. Drink some water, keep moving gently, and let your coach know how you felt next time — they'll adjust.

Then pick your next class. The best results come from showing up regularly, so choose a couple of times that fit your week and keep them. On a free week, we'll check in mid-week to see how it's going, and at the end of the week we'll ask the no-pressure question: did it feel like a place you could belong? If it did, the $39 intro month is the easiest next step.
